Budget Handsets for Raksha Bandhan

Posted: | |
Raksha Bandhan is in a couple of days and for you blokes who haven't yet thought of a present for your sister, a mobile phone is always a great idea. But let's be reasonable, it's not a cheap present of course and to be honest I'd like nothing more than to recommend something fancy that a girl would like, but money is also the object and while we may all have the desire to get our own flesh and blood something worthy of their love, we're not always going to be able to afford it.

In light of that fact, we set up a budget of Rs. 5000 which is quite reasonable and here are a list of handsets available in that range.

Nokia 5000 – Rs. 4,329
The Nokia 5000 handset is what could be called a lower end version of the popular 5310 Xpress Music mobile. It may not bear Nokia's music branding but it still managed to keep its super slim 11mm thin design. This S40 handset is a simple but well designed phone with a sporty feel as well. It comes with Nokia’s Xpress Audio Messaging feature that allows you to send audio messages recorded via the handsets Voice recorder to other compatible devices.

The features that the 500 comes equipped with include –
  • a 2 inch TFT LCD with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution
  • GPRS connectivity support
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • music player
  • FM radio with recording
Micromax X280 - Rs. 3750
Another very stylish handset complete with a leather flap and metal finch is Micromax’s X280. This handset is also great for those ladies who have a rather active lifestyle as it’s a Dual GSM SIM handset. Users will be able to use two GSM numbers simultaneously on this one handset. The company also promises an 8 hour talk time.

Other than that the handset features -
  • a 2.0-inch TFT LCD with a 176 x 220 pixel resolution
  • GPRS
  • microSD card support (up to 8GB)
  • Bluetooth with A2DP
  • VGA camera
  • music player
  • stereo FM radio
  • 3.5mm earphone socket
Spice S5330 – Rs. 2,449
From what I gather, quite a few women actually like flip or clam-shell styled handsets. Spice’s S5330 is a neat looking flip phone with a large keypad and rather streamlined look which makes it quite fashionable.

Its feature set includes –
  • a 1.8-inch TFT LCD with a 128 x 160 pixel resolution
  • GPRS/WAP
  • microSD card support (up to 2GB)
  • audio player with EQs
  • FM radio with recording
  • Indian Calendar function marking all Indian festivals and holidays
  • Mobile tracker for security
  • Multiple language pack
  • 3D like interface
Samsung B520 – Rs. 3,549
In the slider design range Samsung has their B520 handset. It’s a slick looking handset that also gives off a slightly rugged feel with its large five way nav-pad and keys. It’s also quite a small handset making it easy to tote around with out being weighty. The B520 is a god choice for those looking for a handset that’s light weight and yet stylish enough to whip out and catch your eye.

Other features include -
  • a 1.7-inch TFT LCD with a 128 x 160 pixel resolution
  • GPRS/WAP
  • microSD card support (up to 2GB)
  • audio player
  • FM radio with recording
  • Mobile tracker for security
  • 3.5mm earphone socket
LG GB270 – Rs. 4,600
The LG GB270 is already a stylish candy bar designed handset with a button keypad. What makes it even more attractive is that like some of the older mobile handsets of yesteryear, the panels can be removed and swapped. In this case the User Interface also has an option to switch depending on the panel you’re using. This way the handset can be color-coded for style. You can also further personalize the handset by actually sketching, engraving, and embossing photos.

The handset’s other features also include –
  • a 2.0-inch LCD screen
  • Support for WAP 2.0 and Java
  • Bluetooth 1.2 with A2DP
  • microSD card support (1GB provided, supports up to 2GB)
  • VGA camera
  • Audio Player with EQs
  • FM radio with use as an alarm
  • Call recording
Moto YUVA W230 with Tattoo Case – Rs, 3,249
Motorola’s YUVA series has always been quite popular with the youth segment and manages to deliver on the simple features that are provisioned. The W230 is a neat candy bar handset and has gotten especially cooler with a black edition that also has a ‘tattoo’ imprinted on the casing. It’s a low end multimedia device that has a large easy to use keypad and plenty of relevant features.

Those features include -
  • a 1.6-inch TFT LCD with a 128 x 128 pixel resolution
  • GPRS and WAP support
  • microSD card support (up to 2GB)
  • Audio Player
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Indian language pack
We recommend throwing in a 2GB microSD card with the handset if it doesn’t already come with one. No point in having a music phone with no music. If you want to go that extra mile, load the card with her favorite pictures (scaled down to the screen’s resolution) and music. A microSD card would set you back about Rs. 600 for 2GB.

There are plenty of mobile handsets that are out there with loads of features and even those that are available for any price range. These are our choices for those with a strict budget as that seems to be the key word these days – Budget. If you have the money there’s no stopping you from spending it of course, but if you don’t and still want to show your sis how much you care, nothing says it more than a gift with the money you can spare.

Do remember that prices may vary according to your area and place of purchase.
