Intel's new X-25M, X-18M have Data Bugs

Altering BIOS password and reboot makes X-25M, X-18M SSDs unusable and data is lost

Intel has confirmed that its new range of Intel X-18M and X-25M SATA Solid State Drives suffer from data corruption bug and has pulled back the shipments. Yes, these are the same Intel SSDs that boast of 34nm NAND flash memory process manufacture. According to Intel, the data corruption bug occurs only when user sets a BIOS password and then tries to alter it. The company is already testing a firmware upgrade that will take care of X-18M and X-25M SSDs.
Intel had introduced X-18M and X-25M SSDs in a joint venture with Micron and used 34nm lithography technology. This helps in creating denser NAND chips with higher capacities at a comparatively lower price tag from the products manufactured from the 50nm lithography technology.

The data corruption bug strikes when any Intel X-18M and X-25M SSDs user tries to change or remove BIOS password and reboots the computer. Having done that, the SSDs stops any operation and data becomes irretrievable. Intel suggests the users to avoid setting BIOS password and keep checking for firmware upgrade from Intel's site. Until the firmware is validate and rolled out, Intel has stopped shipments of all its X-18M and X-25M SSDs.
