Splosion Man

Posted: | |
Did you know that scientists when killed burst into awesome meat pieces like chunky sausages and T-bone steaks? You really don’t need to kill one to find out; all you need to do is play Twisted Pixel Games' latest Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) title, Splosion Man. Splosion Man is a brand new side-scrolling platformer from the same people who brought you The Maw and allows you to wreak comical havoc as Splosion Man, a scientific experiment gone horribly wrong.

As with all scientific experiments gone horribly wrong Splosion Man receives a few perks in the bargain that allow him to explode – or rather splode at will. Using this new found power he can reduce scientists to chunks of meat by sploding near them. You can do so by simply pressing any one of the face buttons on your Xbox 360 controller. Sploding also doubles up as the game’s jumping mechanic with which you can reach higher grounds by sploding AKA bouncing off walls. Use your splosions wisely as you’re limited to exploding just three times in a row after which you’ll need to recharge that ability for a few seconds before you can use it again.

The game’s high on humor no doubt, but don’t let that throw you off guard. It’s tough as hell and at times may make you eat your own fist. Things start of on a relatively mellow note but by the time you hit the tenth level stuff gets really intense with time-based puzzles and tough platforming sections rearing their ugly heads where even one mistake proves fatal. Either the game’s difficulty curve is a bit erratic or Twisted Pixel felt like cutting us some slack since you will come across an easy level after an insanely frustrating one. Checkpoints are a bit on the erratic side as well and while most are well placed, there are a few that are far apart making you replay a particular frustrating scenario until you get it right.

Die a lot during a particular level and the game takes pity on you allowing you to skip straight to the next level while choosing the "Path of the Coward". To add insult to injury, it’ll even respawn Splosion Man with a pink ribbon tied around his waist . Yeah, not so worth it now is it?
If you can look past the difficulty level, Splosion Man is a highly entertaining platformer.

Splosion Man is a good looking game. 2D environments are detailed in gorgeous HD, scientists and their evil droids look hilarious and Splosion Man himself is particularly well animated. Even when you aren’t controlling him, he’s continuously doing something be it juggling with fireballs or brushing up on his Karate. Level design is well implemented and takes full advantage of the game’s sploding mechanics offering a healthy balance between platforming and combat.

So yes I would say Splosion man is an awesome game as long as you’re willing to bear with the difficulty curve. Due to this, Splosion Man is a game that you really can’t play for hours at a stretch but it’s perfect for those in-between game sessions when all you want to is just Splode the crap out of people. It offers no multiplayer but you can replay the entire campaign in co-op with a buddy either online or on the same console. And as an added bonus, it even ships with unlockables like avatars and a premium theme. All that for just 800 points make Splosion man a must buy. Of course, if you’re still a bit hesitant you could give the demo a shot that’s available on Xbox Live.

Splosion Man is available exclusive on Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft Points.
