Slow, fast moving, twitchy, barely held together, chocolate, strawberry - zombies come in all flavors, but what unites them is the 'squish' each and every one of them make when they meet the butt of your shotgun. If you've been gaming for a while, chances are you've run across this brain-munching breed of cannon fodder at some point. In this article, we pay our respects to the risen dead who hunger for our flesh, and we so lovingly slay. Here's a list of games that we'd like to commemorate for the zombie slaying joy they've bestowed upon us...
Left 4 Dead
Released: 2008
Slaying hordes of fast moving zombies in co-op with three friends - what more could you ask for? Left4Dead's zombies were swift and deadly, but no match for your assault rifle, and a well-coordinated team. If you'd falter though, the game's special 'infected' would make a zombie meal out of you in no time.
Killing Floor
Released: 2009
Considered a Left4Dead clone by many, the low-budget Killing Floor allowed you to face a zombie outbreak in London, where you and up to five friends could take on the undead. The game featured an auto-bullet-time-esque 'ZEDtime' and an unlock system that set it apart from the aforementioned.
Dead Rising
Released: 2006
This 2006 console hit put you in a massive shopping complex with a gazillion zombies to slay, and even more ways to do so. You could use almost anything from the gameworld to kill zombies, but my favorite was to wield a Katana from a weapons store in the mall, that let you slice the limbs off zombies like a hot knife through undead-butter.
Resident Evil series
Released: 1996
The Resident Evil series has been the benchmark for survival horror games for more than a decade now, and for good reason. The lack of ammo and claustrophobic style of the game enhanced the feeling of dread induced by the truckload of T-virus infected mutant zombies thrown at you.
Thief series
Released: 1998
There's nothing like getting freaked out by an re-animated corpse, while you're skulking around in shadows, hiding from powerful Hammerites. While the Thief series' main enemy type wasn't zombies, the ones thrown in there would creep up on you when you least expect it, and were terribly hard to kill, making them a real threat. The Haunted Cathedral level of the first game was one of the scariest levels I've every played!
Call of Duty: World at War
Released: 2008
The bonus mode in World at War called Nazi Zombies, holed you up in a two story shack, and threw loads of zombies at you, as your co-op buddy and you'd fend them off wave after wave. To slow these undead Nazis off, you could board up windows and block doors to gain those extra few seconds you'd need to pop them in the head with your trusty pistol.
The House of the Dead series
Released: 1996
The House of the Dead series is famous for its arcade machines, where you and a mate could wield a gun each to point and shoot your way through many Virtua-Cop styled levels, populated with loads of undead creatures of all shapes and sizes. The series made it to PCs later on, becoming one of the most popular brain-dead point and shooters out there.
Plants Vs Zombies
Released: 2008
One of the most popular spin-off of tower-defense styled games, Plants versus Zombies allowed you to place different kinds of plants which would kill zombies by shooting stuff at them. Not the most logical game, but it's really addictive and loads of fun! Also, every now and then you'd come across a zombie that looked like Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' avatar - it always makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye. R.I.P. MJ.
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Released: 2005
The time traveling console FPS let you play an entire level based in a spoof zombie infested area, where you'd take on zombies as they'd vocalize their craving to munch on your brains in the most hilarious manner. Lets hope that the upcoming 'TimeSplitters 4' will have a zombie level too!
Burn Zombie, Burn!
Released: 2009
This PlayStation Network title allowed you to play as Bruce, as he'd go up against a never ending horde of various zombies. Your goal and only objective is to slay as many zombies as possible by burning them, to earn a high-score before poor Bruce gets his brains eaten up.
Cold Fear
Released: 2005
Cold Fear puts you in the shoes of CIA Agent named Tom Hansen as he fights his way through a ship full of sailors infected by 'exocels', that turns them into zombies. This brilliant survival horror employed a stamina bar, that ensures that you can never run far enough from these creatures before you have to turn around and fight them.
Dead Space
Released: 2008
This eerie game placed you in the isolated confines of a space-station that's turned into a spawning ground for 'necromorphs' - creatures infected with an alien virus that makes them like zombies. The zombies here came in all kinds of deadly shapes and sizes, but the most annoying of the lot were little babies with tentacles sticking out of their backs, that could run on walls. I hate kids!
Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ
Released: 2008
This top-scrolling on rails shooter for the Nintendo DS allowed you to play as Red Riding hood (who seems to be obsessed with collecting automatic firearms), as she'd fend off hordes of zombies and save 'Storyland' and its inhabitants (three little pigs and Pinocchio included) from invading zombies. Grim, weird stuff, but fun as hell!
Half-Life 2
Released: 2004
The cult-classic Half-Life 2 had one of the most freaky and awesome zombie levels ever called Ravenholm - Eastern European mining town where almost the entire population's converted into zombies. The only surviving member - Father Grigori - would watch over you as you'd find your way through this deathtrap.
Monkey Island series
Released: 1990
The main villain in this age-old adventure game series - LeChuck - was a zombified pirate, and the protagonist Guybrush Threepwood's nemesis. I bet you could never find a more humorous zombie pirate out there, even if they were any more of them, that is.
Prototype
Released: 2009
A virus infection turns most of New York's population into some really daft zombies, that are both easy and fun to kill. The game lets you play as Alex, who's been augmented by the same powers and can pretty much pulverize, slice-up, and make mince meat out of the populace in the most fun ways possible!
Dead Island (Upcoming)
Releasing: End of 2009
While on your honeymoon, your plane crashes leaving you stranded on Dead Island along with your wife, and it's your job to find her (and survive) before she becomes food for the island's resident zombies. The game's being developed for the Xbox360 and PC, and a free-roaming styled survival horror. It should be released towards the end of this year.
Left 4 Dead 2 (Upcoming)
Releasing: November 17th, 2009
The sequel to Left 4 Dead will place you in control of another group of survivors as they try to survive the zombie apocalypse with a larger arsenal of weapons. Did I mention that you gain access to chainsaws here? CHAINSAWS! I just can't wait to hear the rumbling of the bladed edge on zombie flesh!
Dead Rising 2 (Upcoming)
Releasing: 2010
The sequel to Dead Rising takes place a few years after the start of the infection, as you fend off zombies in the fictional 'Fortune City' that's been modeled around Reno, Nevada. Fancy killing zombies using a roulette table?
