Movies That Inspire Gaming

Posted: | |
What’s the first thing that comes into your mind after watching a really cool movie? Recreating some of the awesomeness you just saw in a game right? Tons of high profile movies out there have game tie-ins but sadly, most of them suck. To help you out we’ve come up with a list of games that are the closest you’ll come to experiencing certain killer movies (and by killer movies I do mean some of my favorites).

As always feel free to leave your picks in the comments section below.

The Movie: 300
What’s it about: 300 buffed up dudes kicking the living daylight out of the Persian empire. Guts, glory, slow motion and 300 six-packs ensue.

The Game: God of War
One buffed up angsty dude kicking the living daylight out of Greek mythology as you know it. Guts, glory, head ripping, eye stabbing, eye ripping and lots more ensue.

The Movie: The Kingdom
What’s it about: An FBI agent along with a team of specialists is sent to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to investigate the bombing of an American society there.

The Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Besides the fact that Modern Warfare has terrorists, it takes place in the Middle East and deals with extremists hell bent on world domination, I really can’t think of a better reason.

The Movie: Event Horizon
What’s it about: A space ship called the Event Horizon has disappeared for nearly seven years while exploring the outer boundaries of space. Now it’s mysteriously returned with something highly unpleasant on board.

The Game: Dead Space
Even though Doom 3 had more in common with the movie (you know portal to Hell opening up and all), I had to pick Dead Space for its nail biting rendition of ‘when the stuff hits the fan in deep space’ where of course "No one can hear you scream".

The Movie: Desperado
What’s it about: A gunslinger known as “El Mariachi” goes to town on the local drug cartel for shooting up his hand and killing his girlfriend.

The Game: Total Overdose
Even though Total Overdose has nothing in common with the movie as far as the plot’s concerned, I’ve chosen it for its portrayal of over-the-top, ultra-violent Mexican flavored action. Plus the game even let you wield the same Machine-gun-in-a-guitar-case weapon that was present in the movie.

The Movie: Gladiator
What’s it about: A noble Roman general is betrayed by the same Empire he served faithfully and the only way he can inflict some serious pain on his evil doers is by proving himself as gladiator in a blood thirsty arena.

The Game: Shadow of Rome
Besides the ironic fact that the Japanese made a game based on the Roman empire better than most European developers, Shadow of Rome was a highly satisfying hack and slash title where you played as Agrippa, a valiant centurion avenging the death of his mother by mutilating and maiming anyone who dared crossed his path in the local Coliseum.

The Movie: Predator
What’s it about: An alien bounty hunter known as the Predator lands in a Mexican jungle where he tears people apart and adorns their body parts as trophies only to be stopped in his tracks by the Guhvnor of California – Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Game: Crysis
Predator was an awesome film and crysis, not to mention, was an amazing film. So in Crysis you don’t play as an Alien Bounty hunter but there’s no denying the fact that stalking unsuspecting foes using your powers granted by the Nano suit felt a lot like the movie. Of course if Predator: Concrete Jungle was a nice game, we wouldn’t have to look elsewhere.

The Movie: Dawn of the Dead (2004)
What’s it about: Human survivors get trapped in a shopping mall where they have to fend off throngs of undead monstrosities using anything the mall has to offer.

The Game: Dead Rising
Why we’ve chosen it: In Dead Rising, you play Frank West a photojournalist who gets trapped in a shopping mall where he has to fend off throngs of undead monstrosities using anything the mall has to offer.

The movie: Three Kings
What’s it about: Three American soldiers stumble upon tons of hidden treasure during the Gulf War but before they make a clean getaway they must save the helpless locales about to be executed by the local militia.

The Game: Battlefield Bad Company
Four American Soldiers stumble upon bars of Gold in a fictional European country but before they make a clean getaway they must wipe their conscience clean by doing a few good deeds.

The Movie: Any John Woo movie
What’s it about: Slow motion shootouts, highly stylized action and lots of doves.

The Game: Stranglehold or the Max Payne series
To recreate a John Woo experience you could go ahead and play Stranglehold that wasn’t bad per say but if you wanted a bit more than just Chow Yun Fat running and gunning, I suggest the Max Payne series that packed in an awesome story in there as well.

The Movie: Saving Private Ryan
What’s it about: Set during the second World War, Saving Private Ryan was a look at the hellish journey a few American soldiers went through to find an American paratrooper who'd lost all his brothers in the war.

The Game: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

There have been tons of World War games that depict World War II even better than the Medal of Honor series but Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was the only game that actually made you feel the nightmare American troops went through during the landing on Omaha beach in a totally bloodless way.
